The official seal of the Society consists of a circular nine-stage distillation column with a condenser
and a reboiler at the lower portion, and enclosing a ternary diagram and a water reservoir superimposed on each other. Inscribed
on the distillation are the letters “UPLB SChemES” and the year 1986 between the condenser and the reboiler.
The
seal represents the working principles of the Society, its history and the major disciplines essential to its members (chemistry,
engineering, and chemical engineering). The following detailed descriptions of each component of the Society’s official
seal:
Distillation Column – the whole multistage distillation column and the year 1986 represents the date when
the Society was founded – September 11, 1986. the equilibrium arrows within the column represent the 20 charter members
of the Society. They also stand for the relationship among members which should be spontaneous and without prejudice.
Water
reservoir – represents engineering. It also portrays the decision-making process within the Society. Water from
the reservoir will not flow without enough pressure and in similar analogy, ideas will not be implemented into activities
without the support of the majority. Furthermore, just as water may overflow by accumulation, ideas are never disregarded
for they could always be a basis for the generation of ideas, until the majority supports the ideas for implementation.
Simple
glass condenser – represents chemistry. It also signifies the Society’s attitude towards delinquent members.
Just as the condenser prevents the loss of the more volatile component/s of the mixture, the Society reaches out to delinquent
members in order that their commitment may be rekindled for the Society recognizes the fact that each member is an important
part of the organization.
Ternary diagram – represents chemical engineering. It also denotes unity and
diversity within the Society. The ternary diagram describes three substances of different concentrations. It has two-phase
and a one-phase region. Correlating, he Society believes in the uniqueness of an individual hence, it recognizes the fact
that the members have differing personalities. However, despite these differences, the Society still functions as one to fulfill
its goal just as the ternary diagram can describe a mixture may it be two-phased or one-phased.
